GLOCK Discontinues Pistols

GLOCK is turning the page and purging many models out of production. This makes sense as some are chambered in calibers that have lost favor with law enforcement like the .40 Auto and .357 SIG, while others were odd ducks like the long slide pistols. We liken this move to what the U.S. treasury has done with the penny coin. The penny is worth $.01 but the cost to produce one penny is about $3.69. The same is true with GLOCK's pistols. Many of them stayed in GLOCK catalog because of vanity. It was obvious even to consumers that a lot of GLOCK's line up was dated. The complete list of discontinued pistols is below and we provide a run down on each.

Why is GLOCK discontinuing so many models?

According to GLOCK: "In order to focus on the products that will drive future innovation and growth, we are making a strategic decision to reduce our current commercial portfolio. This streamlined approach allows us to concentrate on continuing to deliver the highest-quality and most relevant solutions for the market." This gives us hope that there will be a renewed effort in being a leader in innovative products.

What is interesting about the list of discontinued pistols is that the Long Slide guns have been purged--the G40 and G41--which were niche pistols at best. The G17L Gen5 was just launched and that follows the pattern with G17L, which historically had very limited production runs. Discontinuing the .45 GAP pistols--G37, G38, and G39--would have probably been a blow to Mr. Glock's ego, since that caliber was developed specifically for GLOCK and the caliber bore his name. Buy .45 GAP ammo now if you have one of these pistols. The caliber really never received much traction in law enforcement nor on the commercial market. Axing the .357 SIG guns also makes sense since the caliber was not popular law enforcement nor civilians. SIG doesn't even catalog a pistol in the caliber. Letting go of the G36 is logical. It was GLOCK's first single stack and at the beginning was labeled by some gun writers as a Jamo-matic. GLOCK fixed the issues with the G36 but we live in a 9mm world where a .45 Auto handgun is dated. Dumping the G34 is the real shocker. This has been a popular pistol with competitive shooters. Just look at what the IDPA shooters are using. I think this is a clue that GLOCK is examining the new handgun landscape to figure out what is needed and what is missing.
